After going to Grill&#8217;d every Friday night with her family, our epic vibes won Amy over to don a bandanna and join us as a Team Member Trainee. Over the past eight years, Amy&#8217;s energy and passion fuelled her development through the Grill&#8217;d Career Journey to Restaurant Manager, before making the move down to become our Leadership Field Trainer.
&#8220;It&#8217;s so crazy to reflect back on now, but I joined Grill&#8217;d because I thought the team were just so cool and I wanted to be part of that.
&#8220;What I love most about working at Grill&#8217;d hasn&#8217;t changed, it&#8217;s the people. We get to connect not just with our guests, but as a team. Most of my best friends and people in my life work at Grill&#8217;d, so just being around that people energy every day keeps me going.
When it comes to supporting the local community, Amy describes our Local Matters program as more than just a jar.
&#8220;I first started leading Local Matters when I was an Assistant Restaurant Manager and through that I could really see the impact of what we could do.
&#8220;One of my most impactful moments at Grill&#8217;d was through a Local Matters partnership with a mini farm project that donates their produce to those in need. I took the team down for a visit and we became farmers for a day, planting so much. That experience changed not just how I felt about Local Matters, but the whole team.
To feel good in the moment and beyond, Amy&#8217;s Grill&#8217;d go-to burger mixes up an old fave.
&#8220;It&#8217;s the Baa Baa Burger on Panini, but of course you need to make a few changes, so I sub the tasty cheese and herbed mayo out and add chipotle mayo and goat cheese.&#8221;

At Grill&#8217;d, Local Matters is in our DNA. It&#8217;s our way of spreading the local love in the communities we call home. For our superstar WA Growth Coach, Sharna, Local Matters is what keeps us connected.
“Local Matters is who we are. It&#8217;s the core of what we do, it&#8217;s where we come from, and it keeps us grounded every day&#8221;.
We all know a Community Hero. They’re not just our nurses, first responders, and police officers. They’re our loved ones, mates, and tireless protectors, who show up for us every day. Pulling all-nighters. Making (often unnoticed) sacrifices. We want to thank these legends for their incredible work supporting our communities – so we’re going big with a Local Matters National Takeover. This month, every Grill’d restaurant across the nation will feature jars for our three chosen not-for-profits, in one big show of support. In total, we’ll be donating $89,000 across these three amazing not-for-profits.
When asked what being part of our Local Matters program means to them, St John Ambulance Australia&#8217;s Partnerships and Programs Manager, Fairlie, talked to the impactful connection it creates with the community.
&#8220;Being part of the Local Matters Program is a powerful acknowledgement of the lifesaving work our St John volunteers do every day.
&#8220;The Local Matters donation will directly strengthen our ability to support St John volunteers as they respond to emergencies. It helps provide the equipment, training, and resources they need to deliver fast, skilled care when our community needs it most&#8221;.
As a small organisation doing big things for nurses, the Australian College of Nursing (ACN) Foundation&#8217;s Director of Philanthropy, Julijana, shared that with more than 440,000 registered nurses across the country, the need for support is huge.
&#8220;The ACN Foundation has assisted 100’s of nurses through education programs and leadership opportunities.
&#8220;Funds raised through Local Matters will help expand this impact even further, by reducing financial pressures, opening doors to career advancement and strengthening the future of Australia’s nursing workforce&#8221;.
For Police Care Australia, being part of our Local Matters program means strengthening the support available to those who serve our communities every day.

Behind the development of our Wickedly Good and Oscar Piastri 81 burgers, Amy took 5 with our team to share her journey with Grill&#8217;d, which started when we first opened our doors over 21 years ago.
&nbsp;
&#8220;My journey started in restaurant alongside Simon (Crowe), and then it evolved as we needed a Support Office. I&#8217;ve been across practically every department, including Operations, Marketing and Supply. Back in the beginning, we had to do it all. Now I get to develop and evolve our products, while staying true to what we&#8217;re all about &#8211; all taste, no regrets.
&nbsp;
When it comes to career highlights, Amy says she has hundreds of memorable moments. From opening the second Grill&#8217;d restaurant to working on our epic campaign partnerships, and opening Grill&#8217;d Bali, our first international restaurant. If she had to choose, there is one memory that&#8217;s closest to her heart.
&nbsp;
&#8220;The one that&#8217;s really huge in my life is our Local Matters Reward Trips, where we took our restaurant Local Matters Legends to Cambodia to volunteer. It&#8217;s something I&#8217;ve continued to do on a personal level, regularly spending time there supporting a number of not-for-profits.
To feel good in the moment and beyond, Amy&#8217;s Grill&#8217;d go-to is a Bacon and Cheese on Panini, swapping in aged cheddar. As for her favourite collaboration, that&#8217;s not so easy.

<h1>Nutrition Take 5: Summer Flvrs 😎🍔</h1>
Following the launch of our new summer menu, our legendary Nutritionist, Alexsandra (Alex), took 5 with our team to talk through the nutritional benefits of her three favourite products, starting with our Healthy Fried Chicken Pow Pow Burger.
&#8220;The Pow Pow burger provides up to 50% of our daily required protein intake. The new patty is gluten free, made from 100% RSPCA Approved chicken, has a double crunch coating, and is cooked in extra virgin olive oil, so we also get the benefits of Vitamin E.
Next on her list is our IPL (Indian Pea &amp; Lentil) burger, which joins our vegetarian line-up.
&#8220;The IPL&#8217;s patty is made of curried peas and lentils, giving us over 14 grams of fibre, which is up to 60% of our daily required fibre intake. Fibre is great for digestion, mental health and clarity, and feeding the gut with awesome prebiotics too.
Rounding out her top three is The Honey&#8217;d Hen.
&#8220;The Honey&#8217;d Hen is a delicious and light salad that&#8217;s high in protein and contains 13 essential vitamins and minerals. The sweet cranberries also provide us with extra antioxidants.
When it comes to selecting her Grill&#8217;d summer go-to, Alex says it all comes down to texture.
&#8220;It&#8217;s definitely our new IPL burger. I&#8217;m a texture girl and the fact that this has got our delicious seed mix in it, means I&#8217;m definitely ordering it on repeat this summer&#8221;.

In the countdown to his fave shift of the year, Akshaan took five with our team to reflect on his Grill&#8217;d journey over the past two years.
&#8220;My biggest highlight at Grill&#8217;d is definitely working on the AFL Grand Final nights, it&#8217;s one of our biggest nights of the year. As a people person, I love that as a team we hype each other up and create a really fun vibe and atmosphere for our guests&#8230; It&#8217;s hard to beat.
Joining Grill&#8217;d in 2022 for his love of quality burgers and to be part of the overall Grill&#8217;d experience, Akshaan describes working at Grill&#8217;d as rewarding, supportive, and fast paced.
&#8220;The energy and vibe the team bring continues to get me up each day, excited to come to work. My favourite station is definitely being on Grill. I think it&#8217;s super hands-on and fast paced, and I like being in the centre of everything in the servery.
When it comes to feeling good in the moment and beyond, Akshaan&#8217;s go-to Grill&#8217;d burger may be a little controversial for our Healthy Friend Chicken lovers.
&#8220;It&#8217;s a Healthy Fried Chicken Chipotle, swap the Healthy Fried Chicken for wagyu with cheese and jalapenos.&#8221;

In the countdown to Father&#8217;s Day, our Grill&#8217;d Partner, Reece took five with our team to share his experiences and advice as a working parent.
&#8220;With the support of a well-led restaurant through my Assistant Managers and exceptional care from my leaders, I was able to take the time I needed to adjust to a new life with a baby. I now have two children, and both times I have had a good experience integrating back into work; so much so that more babies might come!
If there was one piece of advise Reece would give to working parents, he says it all comes down to gratitude.
&#8220;You get busy, and the day goes by so quickly you forget to take a moment to appreciate your partner and the beautiful children you have created. Make time for this moment, no matter what happens. 
Over the past seven years, Reece&#8217;s journey with Grill’d has been overflowing with high energy and high reward.
“My number one career highlight was taking a call from Sacha, our National Operations Manager, after a particularly tough year on a personal note to congratulate our restaurant&#8217;s performance. As a reward, I was offered a trip to Singapore with some of the highest performing Restaurant Managers across the country; the trip was incredible.
&#8220;The second would have to be when I was given the opportunity to become a Grill’d Partner. From hearing my nomination, doing my presentation to the Executive Team, and being formally signed up on the ownership pathway, this was, and continues to be, an amazing experience.
&#8220;Rounding out my top three highlights, in 2022 we won the WA Restaurant of the Year Award. It was a testament to the hard work my team did and continues to do, and a very proud moment for me.
To feel good in the moment and beyond, Reece puts his own twist on a Grill&#8217;d classic.
&#8220;My go-to is a Summer Sunset on a Traditional bun, with egg mayo instead of herbed mayo and hot chilli relish instead of tomato relish.”

In the final countdown to <a class="apkmuMaFXiAyzXXfqtKvfkGGdytsALnAqY " tabindex="0" href="https://www.wearitpurple.org/" target="_self" data-test-app-aware-link="">Wear it Purple</a> Day, our Optimisation Specialist, Wes took five with our team to share his experiences and advice on creating a more inclusive future for all Aussies.
From starting his journey with Grill&#8217;d over 10 years ago as a uni student in Brisbane, Wes progressed to Team Leader before making the move down to Melbourne to join our Digital Team in our Support Office. When you work in a high-energy environment there&#8217;s highlights every day, but for Wes there&#8217;s three key moments that really stand out.
&#8220;Working in the Airstream at Splendour in the Grass 2016 was epic. There were huge crowds of Grill’d fans, and I was working alongside friends. I even helped build the first Grill’d email subscriber list on the ground, so you could say I’ve been digital from the start!
&#8220;Building an interactive game for our Stranger Things campaign was heaps of fun. We had ‘Upside-downed’ photographs of our restaurants, and players needed to use a torch spotlight to find the Demogorgon burger and other Stranger Things characters. It set the foundation for other partnership campaigns, like Barbie and Oscar Piastri, which I&#8217;ve really enjoyed working on.
&#8220;My last highlight would be re-launching the Grill’d app and website. It was an invaluable learning experience to help build a digital product from the ground up, working with DEPT® to take our app to five stars in the App Store&#8230;so we have a digital product that’s as good as our burgers!
When it comes to Wear it Purple Day and what it means to him, Wes highlights the important role everyone plays in creating inclusive spaces where people from all walks of life can thrive.
&#8220;Wear it Purple Day is a reminder that we are all active participants in creating ‘safe spaces’ for LGBTQIA+ youth, and other marginalised groups in society. It’s about visibility, solidarity, and responsibility.
&#8220;It&#8217;s important for leaders to actively advocate for marginalised voices. Queer people often spend their lives advocating for themselves. When leaders step up as allies and help share the load, it’s incredibly meaningful. Educate yourself, listen to queer stories, and use your influence to create space.
&#8220;For LGBTQIA+ youth, surround yourself with people who celebrate you, not just accept you. Your perspective is valuable and your story matters. 
When it comes to Wes&#8217; Grill’d go-to order, there&#8217;s once burger that has his heart.
&#8220;I change my order every other time, but I always come back to the Summer Sunset. You just can’t beat pineapple on a burger. And Healthy Fried Chicken bites are a non-negotiable&#8221;.

In the countdown to <a class="apkmuMaFXiAyzXXfqtKvfkGGdytsALnAqY " tabindex="0" href="https://www.wearitpurple.org/" target="_self" data-test-app-aware-link="">Wear it Purple</a> Day, our superstar Senior Partnerships Manager, Cameron (Cam) took five with our team to share his experiences and advice on creating a more inclusive future for all Aussies.
From starting his career as a promotions intern at a New Zealand radio station to moving to Australia with a radio show that saw him, amongst many things, bring a human-sized sushi train to life, and the many large partnership activations he&#8217;s gone on to lead since, Cam&#8217;s career has been an incredible ride. From media to health and wellness tech, and now hospitality, despite the breadth of industries he&#8217;s worked in and alongside, they all have one thing in common.
&#8220;I’ve always focused on working in organisations that are deeply connected to their communities, driven to do good, play as a team, take pride in what they stand for, and aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. Grill’d embodies all of this, and I love sharing the brand with new audiences via our partnerships.
When it comes to career highlights, in addition to the amazing people and industries he&#8217;s worked with over the past 15 years, Cam says there&#8217;s two that stand out&#8230; with another one on the horizon.
&#8220;Activating at the Australian Grand Prix with Grill’d in March would definitely be a career highlight. This was a true team effort, bringing in team from across the country, and in typical Melbourne weather we went from blazing hot to torrential downpours. I got to connect with our guests and share the incredible Oscar Piastri burger with fans.
&#8220;Travelling to the other side of the globe to connect with community and host run clubs and Pilates workouts for Kic is also something I&#8217;ll always remember.
When it comes to Wear it Purple Day and what it means to him, Cam looks inwards.
&#8220;Wear It Purple Day means acknowledging how important it is to see yourself reflected in the community and your workplace. It&#8217;s really important for young people growing up to have people they can go to and trust, but also feel supported and feel they can bring their true self to work.
&#8220;For me, it’s a day to commit to being part of that reflection and to champion pride and inclusion every day, not just today.
To feel good in the moment and beyond, Cam keeps coming back to a Grill&#8217;d classic.
&#8220;I love flipping around the menu but I always go back to my faithful Crispy Bacon &amp; Cheese&#8221;.

We&#8217;re so flippin&#8217; excited to launch our new Healthy Fried Chicken tenders. Double crunch, cooked in Australian extra virgin olive oil, made from 100% RSPCA approved chicken, and naturally high in protein, our Head of Innovation, Joshua says they are healthier, tastier, and crunchier.
&#8220;After developing our Healthy Fried Chicken bites five years ago, through some advancements in technology, it&#8217;s really exciting to now launch our new Healthy Fried Chicken tenders with a signature double crunch coating,&#8221; says Josh.
To accompany our new double crunch tenders, which are an important evolution to our Healthy Fried Chicken range, Josh says he and the team had a lot of fun designing the five deluxe dips that go with them.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve got some really interesting flavours, but my favourite is the Perfect Pickl&#8217;d Mayo, which is reminiscent of a burger-style sauce.

One of our favourite restaurant rituals is giving our guests a Local Matters token and letting them vote for the community group closest to their hearts. As our NSW Growth Coach, Rachel shares, giving back to the communities we serve runs deep in our blood.
&#8220;I adore our Local Matters program for so many reasons. It gives our young teams exposure to doing something good, not because you have to, but because you can. It creates an opportunity for them to get involved and engage with groups that they are passionate about, in a different manner.
&#8220;It is not uncommon for our Team Members to approach our Restaurant Managers with groups they think would benefit from the program&#8221;.

Following a lifetime love of food, Steve&#8217;s hospitality career took off eleven years ago, and he hasn&#8217;t looked back since. Joining our NSW Ops Team last December, this year he&#8217;s also been leading the NSW operations of our City Support program.

“It all comes down to human connection. Every night, I make a point to connect with each person who joins the queue, and these small icebreakers often open the door to deeper, more meaningful conversations. It’s truly beautiful to see people light up, feel seen, and heard.
Describing City Support as love, community, and togetherness, Steve’s most impactful moment came during his first City Support.
“I was on wrap, which gave me a clear view of every guest who walked through the door. The first fifty guests had already tugged at my heartstrings, but one moment shifted everything. A woman arrived with three children and all their belongings packed into a single shopping trolley. That’s when my heart truly broke. From that moment on, I understood how vital City Support and initiatives like it really are. It’s not just an evening of good feels; for many, it’s life-giving.
Running since 2022, City Support has become our team’s favourite shift of the month. When it comes to the future, Steve&#8217;s vision is all about growth.
“There&#8217;s a declining number of guests after 7pm. With thirty minutes left, I would love to serve another 100 guests, people I know are out there, hungry and in need of a meal”.

“City Support means so much to me because it’s an opportunity to give back. It’s a wholesome, energetic event, and for me, it also brings a lot of perspective on a personal level.
Describing City Support as heartwarming, rewarding, and energic, Adam’s favourite moments of the night are at the start and end of service.
“There’s three things I love most about City Support. The first is seeing the transition of our first-time volunteers, who arrive feeling nervous and leave feeling energised. The second is our pre-shift huddle, where we raise the energy and connect as a team before service begins, and the third is the thanks we receive at the end of the night from our guests. Whether it’s hugs, handshakes, or high fives, you can see that you’re making a measurable impact in their lives.
Running since 2022, City Support has become our team’s favourite shift of the month. When reflecting on why the connection runs deep, Adam says it comes down to two key elements.
“The number one reason why our team loves being part of City Support is because we&#8217;re serving the best meal our guests will have all month, and being part of this is super special. The second is because it’s super fun, our team gets to hang out with superstars from across the country.
When it comes to Adam’s vision for City Support, it’s as humble and inspiring as he is.
“My vision for City Support is to keep the spirit alive. Like Local Matters, it’s the heart and soul of our business, and a key reason why many people join us”.

City Support Take 5 with our VIC Growth Coach, Adam

<h3>Take 5 with our Assistant Restaurant Manager, Kirrah 🫶</h3>
Kirrah joined our team because all her mates were working at Grill’d. Seven years later, she moved from Queensland to Melbourne to open our first Victorian drive-thru restaurant, a moment she says tops her highlights list.
&#8220;I worked at Grill&#8217;d through uni because all of my friends were there and we had so much fun. I then graduated and started teaching, but decided I liked working at Grill&#8217;d more, so I became an Assistant Restaurant Manager.
&#8220;The biggest highlight of my career is moving to Melbourne with my friend Sam, we both came from QLD as Managers to open Grill&#8217;d&#8217;s first VIC drive-thru together. It&#8217;s something that felt crazy at the time, because we&#8217;ve never done it before, but it was fun to do it together.
Kirrah&#8217;s primary superpower just happens to be the secret ingredient to creating the ultimate drive-thru experience for our guests.
&#8220;You need to have so much more energy on drive-thru, because over the speaker, you can&#8217;t see anyone&#8217;s faces, so you really have to use your voice. You also get to make all the food yourself, and personally interact with our guests when they come through.
As we approach the restaurant&#8217;s one year anniversary, Kirrah says the three key changes from day one to now are the team&#8217;s increased competency and seamless flow, the community connection they&#8217;ve cultivated with guests, and&#8230; the headsets.
&#8220;There are so many buttons on the headsets, which took a while to get used too, but now our team are just so comfy with them.
To feel good in the moment and beyond, Kirrah continues to get the same burger she&#8217;s had for the past six years.
&#8220;I get the Beyond Burger, because I&#8217;m vegan, and I have satay sauce, vegan mayo, and mustard. Then I add onion rings and a Mango Pash Chill&#8217;d Sip on the side&#8221;.

Over five and a half years ago Elle worked her first shift at Grill’d, and she hasn’t looked back since, continuing to work her way up to now becoming one of our first Venue Managers.
“Looking back over the years, there have been plenty of career highlights, but if I had to name a few they would be breaking the sales record this summer, opening our first restaurant in Tasmania, and a really personal one is training one of my good friends so she could progress from Team Member to Restaurant Manager.

&#8220;I found coming back to work after becoming a Mum really difficult. The transition was personally really hard, and at each stage, I had to prove to myself that I could do it. I did take it slowly, and the flexibility at Grill’d has been great.
“My one piece of advice to working parents is to stay true to yourself, everyone has a different rule book.
For over eight years, Dani’s innovative designs continue to enhance our guests’ restaurant experience. Her career highlight aligns with both her love of chocolate and a definitive moment for Koko Black.
“The most memorable moment in my career was working on the rebrand and launch of Koko Black. It’s a very rare moment when you can look at an Australian brand and redesign all the parts to set it up for success.
Dani’s daily non-negotiables are coffee and spending time with her kids, either before or after work. When it comes to her Grill’d go-to order, it’s a straight-up classic.

&#8220;I was lucky to have a supportive team at work who were happy to work around me as I adjusted to my new life as a working Mum, as well as a great support network at home. Although we had to make some big changes, the transition was fairly smooth.
“My advice to new working parents is to be as organised as you can, as life gets very busy very quickly. A support network at home and work is also a must, along with knowing that most of us are just guessing as we go along too; there is absolutely no rulebook.
Over the past three years, Emma has progressed her career in alignment with the Grill’d partnership program to now lead one of our NSW Restaurants as a Growth Partner.
“The most memorable moments in my career have definitely been the development and career transitions at Grill’d, through Team Member, Assistant Restaurant Manager, Restaurant Manager, and now Growth Partner… with hopefully more to come!

After an extensive career leading, transforming, and growing some of Australia’s largest retailers, we captured Ed’s attention with our epic burgers and are so excited that this love affair has seen him join our team as Chief Operations Officer.
Over the past month, Ed’s been working alongside our restaurant teams across the country, learning how to serve up our delicious healthy burgers, made with love.
“There’s three areas in our restaurants that I’ve really liked working in so far. My number one was working on the till at my first City Support on Tuesday. It’s such a special experience and an initiative I feel more people should know about. The second is wrap, I like that you get to see what’s going on in the restaurant while also controlling the pace and food quality for our guests. And the third is the grill. To me, the grill feels like the heart of what we do to deliver our awesome burgers, so I’ve really loved my time there too.
Ed’s daily non-negotiable is two morning coffees, and his constant career challenge is one most working parents will relate to.
“Showing up and being everything I want to be at work and at home is a challenge with forever conflicting priorities. By no means have I mastered it, but it’s a challenge I continue to lean into.
To feel good in the moment and beyond, Ed’s go-to Grill’d burger is a classic.

In the final countdown to International Women&#8217;s Day 2025, our Head of Marketing Campaigns, Emily (Em) took five with our team to share her experiences and advice to accelerate their development. When it comes to positively impacting women&#8217;s progression at Grill&#8217;d, Em is all about focusing on growth and development.
&#8220;Working in Marketing, I feel very privileged to lead a team, predominately of women, who are passionate, engaging, smart, and just incredible people, which makes my job easy when I think of how I accelerate them. So for me, it’s really about making sure they all have a clear development plan in place, as well as keeping them accountable and supporting them through this, so they gain the skills and connections they need to achieve their goals.&#8221;
Just over 10 years ago, Em joined her local Grill’d restaurant and worked her first restaurant shift. The transition from restaurant to joining our Marketing Team (for the first time) formed a pivotal moment in Em&#8217;s career.
&#8220;There was a transition period where I worked both in restaurant and the Marketing team and we launched a Local Matters national takeover with a charity partner that supported kids who experience violence. I was able to contribute to the work that goes into developing a campaign and giving back, and then I was also working the shifts where we were giving away free burgers to guests who supported our charity partner. 
&#8220;Through this experience, I was able to see the impact Marketing has on our restaurant teams, and the impact of the work we do as a business, and the good it has in our communities. It really shaped how I saw marketing and the trajectory of my career.&#8221;

When it comes to positively impacting women&#8217;s progression at Grill&#8217;d, Sam takes inspiration from those who inspired her.
&#8220;I reflect on those women who have inspired me and are a positive role model in the workplace, including Grill’d OG team member (21 years) and Head of Menu, Amy D. I am now inspired to be that same role model for my team, giving them the opportunity to accelerate their careers and supporting whatever pathway they want to take&#8221;.
Over the past 16 years, Sam has progressed her career in alignment with the Grill&#8217;d partnership program. This journey has been one full of high energy and reward, which more recently saw her take on her biggest challenge to date, opening our first Victorian drive-thru restaurant.
&#8220;Six months after opening Chaddy Village, we’re now absolutely smashing it. From this, my next career move is Ownership Partner, once I finish my Joint Venture Partnership in a couple of years.&#8221;

Isabella is an Assistant Restaurant Manager at Grill’d Garden City, Queensland. But that’s not all she does. Grill’d has a flexible working environment which helps Isabella manage three sports while working full-time and studying a Master&#8217;s in teaching!

<h3>How do you manage all your sports and studies while working at Grill’d? </h3>
Grill’d is really flexible and supportive like that. My Restaurant Manager is really good at helping me juggle everything, giving me enough days off and working around my sport and study. My team at Grill’d is like a family and we all look out for each other. 
I think the only reason why I&#8217;ve been so successful in my sport and studies is that Grill’d is so flexible and it allows me to be me.

<h3>How would you describe the team at Grill’d?</h3>
It&#8217;s just like a family. We have our ups and downs as all families do. But it&#8217;s very supportive and we always look out for each other. We&#8217;re there to watch everyone grow and we want to push everyone to reach their goals. When I have my Team Members in, I&#8217;m always asking them how they&#8217;re going and what they&#8217;re doing. If there are any issues, I&#8217;m always there for them and my other Managers are always there for me. It’s really nice to come to work and feel supported.

<h3>How has Grill’d helped you grow? What are some of the perks? </h3>
The certificate as a Team Member was really great. I also completed another Certificate in Leadership last year. When we reach our goals we also receive little bonuses and we create rewards for our team, like free food! It’s the small things that can really make someone&#8217;s day. Especially for people studying at uni and living out of home, having a meal and rewards at work can really make their day!

<h3>What would you say to someone thinking about joining Grill’d?</h3>
It’s an amazing job. Working at Grill’d isn’t that hard, especially when you’re in an environment with your friends and playing cool music with lollies in the back. It’s a big vibe. Grill’d has made me really motivated because it’s so flexible and the people are really there to support you. ​​​​The managers and owners of Grill’d are amazing too. They really do want to make it the best environment for everyone and there is always someone looking out for you. You’ll learn, you’ll grow, you’ll have lots of fun and someone will always be there for you when you need them.

Managing Sport, Study and Grill’d

Hollie is the Restaurant manager on the Gold Coast glitter strip, Surfer Paradise. It’s arguably one of the most sought-after places to work, with the beach less than 50 metres from the restaurant. Hollie has been with Grill’d for 4 years, working at a number of different locations across the Gold Coast. Although being a Restaurant Manager takes up a lot of Hollie’s time, that’s not all she does. She is also a sister, an aunt and an incredible dog mum to the cutest little 4-year-old french bulldog!

<h3>What do you do as a Restaurant Manager?</h3>
I make sure that the restaurant runs smoothly day-to-day. I coach and train my team and make sure that all our customers have a great experience. It’s a full-on job. Because the restaurant is running all the time, I need to make sure that everything is running smoothly. But I also have my Assistant Restaurant Managers who always have my back.
<h3>What has been your Grill’d career journey?</h3>
Before Grill’d I was a Restaurant Manager at another restaurant (not Grill’d) for 2 years. It was a great starting point. It was very structured,whereas at Grill’d you get a lot more flexibility, ánd I can develop teams better and spend more time on customer service.
When I started at Grill’d I was hired as an ARM at Pacific Fair and then moved to Surfer’s Paradise where I became Restaurant Manager.

<h3>What has been a memorable experience at work?</h3>
I’ve made a lot of friends at Grill’d. I wouldn&#8217;t say that there is one specific experience but I love that Grill’d have taken me on this journey. I’ve personally developed through it into the person I am today.
<h3>What would you say to someone thinking of working at Grill’d?</h3>
Choose Grill’d if you want a job that&#8217;s more than just a ‘job’. Obviously, you’re going to make great friends. But if you want something that&#8217;s going to give you a little bit more, then Grill’d is the choice for you. More responsibility, more flexibility, more choices, pick your own path and passion. There are definitely a lot of different avenues you can go down.

Meet Hollie, Restaurant Manager at Grill’d Surfers Paradise

Samuel Diggins is a Restaurant Manager Trainer at Grill’d Manuka in Canberra. But it was only a few years ago that he was touring Australia and New Zealand as the drummer in his melodic hardcore band, Purity. Samuel has worked at 5 different restaurants in Canberra over the past 5 years and has become embedded in the local community through Grill’d Local Matters program.

<h3>What has been a memorable experience of Local matters at Grill’d?</h3>
One of the first Local Matters activations I ran was at the Grill’d Belconnen restaurant, helping a local school fundraise for their Japan trip. They came in and decorated the store, dressed up in traditional Japanese garments and did a little performance for us and everyone in the store. They were so thankful and engaged with Local Matters.
The other one would be at Christmas when we partnered with five different community groups around Canberra. The groups included homeless shelters and a food pantry.
We sent out invitations for free dinners for anyone in need. We also organised a food drive in the restaurant for the month of December, and customers, our team, and the community donated food and non-perishables for people in need.
On Christmas Eve we had a big dinner with everyone who had an invitation. We gave out free burgers and met all these amazing people in our community who have fallen on hard times. At the end of the night everyone went home with a little gift pack full of food, clothes, and toiletries.
I was able to walk around and have some really great conversations with people over a meal. The human connection part of it was just as big of a moment for them as the food or donations. It was really fulfilling for me but also a really great thing Grill’d did for the community.

<h3>Was there anyone in particular that you really connected with?</h3>
At that Christmas Eve dinner, I met Chris who came from the Early Morning Centre. He had a job until 3 days prior, when he was let go and that really shot him in the foot. He had his family coming down for Christmas but he was stressed because he didn&#8217;t have any money to make Christmas lunch for them. So we loaded him up with a bunch of food and supplies for the Christmas period. It was really special. He cried a little bit on my shoulder. It was super lovely.
<h3>What has Local Matters done for you?</h3>
Local Matters has pushed the meaning of community into my personal life. It’s given me a broader view of what everybody else in the community is dealing with and not just thinking of myself and my own issues. Working at Grill’d has driven me to understand a little bit more. Every time I have a group I always take the time to sit down and get to know them and understand what they are going through and how we can be supportive. Local Matters has given me a better sense of community in my everyday life.

<h3>How often do you do activations?</h3>
We try to do them once a month, whether that’s in-store or going out to volunteer. We went out with Trash Gather not long ago and picked up rubbish around Canberra for the day. We&#8217;re not just fundraising but also volunteering.
<h3>Why is Grill’d such a great place to work?</h3>
If you want to do something meaningful within the hospitality space, Grill’d is incredible. It goes beyond food and customer service. It makes me feel like I have a bigger purpose. I can give back to the community and use the platform for good. We are Local Matters down to the core.

Using Grill’d as a platform to give back.

Kaitlin is the Assistant Restaurant Manager at New Market, Queensland. When she’s not at Grill’d, you’ll most likely find her on a footy field, playing rugby league or Oz Tag. She’s also currently studying to be a Midwife and is in her final year at ACU. We had a chat with Kaitlin about how she manages her sport and studies with Grill’d.

<h3>How do you manage to juggle being a student midwife and working at Grill’d? </h3>
My Restaurant Manager is so amazing. As long as I give notice, she will drop whatever she needs to make sure I can work. Sport and study take up a lot of time and the unpredictability of midwifery means that my roster is often changing. I’m also on call with some soon to be mums which means that I can get a call when they go into labour, meaning I need to rush to the hospital. But Grill’d is supportive of that and I always tell them when I think that one of my ladies is going into labour. 
&nbsp;
<h3>How would you describe the team at Grill’d? </h3>
It’s just like a family. We just had two birthday parties and everyone from Grill’d was invited. It really wouldn’t be the same if everyone wasn&#8217;t there. Everyone is so close-knit and the staff at my restaurant are second to none. They’re so welcoming and so lovely and they&#8217;ll drop anything to help you. I&#8217;ve got so many close-knit friends from work that I had never had before from any other work environment.
 
<h3>Is Grill’d a High Energy, High Reward place to work?</h3>
Definitely. Like today, we were really busy for an hour and everyone just knuckled down and smashed it out. But then once it was over we were talking about the weekend plans and what everyone&#8217;s up to.
Local Matters also makes work feel really rewarding. Our restaurant is really engaged with the community. My footy team is on the Local Matters jars in March so I’m really looking forward to the team dinner for everyone to come down.

<h3>What would you say to someone thinking about joining Grill’d?</h3>
I&#8217;ve learned so much more about myself working at Grill&#8217;d than I think I would in any other business. There are times where you have to reflect and be like, Oh, did we just do 600 burgers in two hours? 
There is a lot of self-reflection and progression that you don&#8217;t get in many other jobs. Every person that you deal with is different. Especially with teaching and coaching feedback. What works for one person might make another person cry. Being able to say to someone, “Look, this is what I need you to work on and here&#8217;s how I want you to get there”, is a really important skill. The leadership skills I’ve learned at Grill’d will help me in so many aspects in my future, even when I start working in a hospital.

<h3>What advice do you have for new Grill’d team members?</h3>
Stick with the internship! Push through the first 12 months, you’ll feel rewarded at the end. You also learn so much in the first 12 months, both about yourself and hospitality in general. It’s such a great place to work and it just takes a little bit of grit when you first start.

Beyond the Grill with Student Midwife, Kaitlin

Samantha is the Assistant Restaurant Manager at Belconnen in the Australian Capital. Originally from Sydney, Samantha moved to Canberra to be closer to her twin sister. After working at a fast-food restaurant for 5 years she knew it was time to make a change.. so she landed at Grill’d. Samantha has a strong passion for Local Matters and loves using Grill’d as a platform to help others, just like how others helped her when she was a kid.

<h3>Who are you outside of work? </h3>
I was studying at University but it wasn&#8217;t something I saw myself enjoying in the long run. I decided to focus my energy on Grill’d and building a career that I actually love. 
I’m also a horse rider but unfortunately, my horses are all back in Sydney, so my time off is spent hiking, going to the gym, and spending rainy days in bed watching Netflix.

<h3>What does Local Matters mean to you? </h3>
It’s a way for me to give back to the community. We have various small charities which haven’t got a lot of community outreach. From our jars, people ask questions and want to learn more or want to get involved. It’s not just about monetary donations, it’s about raising awareness and making connections with the community. We’ve also started taking the team out to volunteer.

<h3>Can you tell us a bit about 1 million bottles for Hodgkin&#8217;s Lymphoma?</h3>
Sasha, our Area Manager, had the idea to collect one million bottles to raise money for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma research, after a colleague was diagnosed. We collect all the bottles from our restaurants (some employees also bring them in from home), then I take them to the bottle deposit and get 10c per bottle. So far we have collected 8000 bottles. But once we reach 1 million bottles we aren’t going to stop! Moving forward, we’re going to continue the bottle collections and donate the money to a selected charity each time we’ve collected 1 million.

<h3>Why does Local Matters mean so much to you?</h3>
I was really sick when I was a kid. I had my left jaw reconstructed out of metal, due to a tumour when I was 9 years old. My most recent surgery was only last year, so it’s been a 13 year ordeal with me being in hospital for months on end. When I was at the Westmead children&#8217;s hospital, the Ronald McDonald House really helped me out and made it a fun experience; they made my day better when I was sick and couldn&#8217;t do anything. So now that I&#8217;m healthy, I want to give back.

Collecting 1 million bottles for Hodgkins Lymphoma

Mia is the Restaurant Manager at Grill’d on Melbourne’s Swan Street. In her 13 years of working at Grill’d she’s had some incredible experiences- from flying to the USA to visit the Impossible Headquarters to managing one of Melbourne busiest Grill’d restaurants.  She also manages to run an amazing team at Grill’d while juggling life with her 2-year-old son!

<h2>What has been your Grill’d career journey? </h2>
I started as a team member and moved up to team leader within three months of starting. (which is really quick), Two years later I moved to Assistant Restaurant Manager. 
I did some travelling during my time as Assistant Restaurant Manager, including 3 months of backpacking through Europe. This is often really hard to do in most hospitality roles but Grill’d was more than happy for me to take a holiday. I had annual leave built up so I got paid the whole three months too! I then became a restaurant manager, which I have now been for seven years.
Flexibility is such a great thing at Grill’d. It’s not a huge issue if you ever want to take time off as long as you give everyone enough notice, then we are more than happy to make it happen. This is something that is often really difficult in most hospitality jobs.

<h2>What has been a memorable experience at work? </h2>
Four years ago Grill&#8217;d had a reward and recognition program where they flew me and a few other managers to America! We went to San Francisco to visit the Impossible headquarters. It is really cool now to see it in all of our restaurants. We then went to Disneyland in LA where we did a two-day course with Disney. The people I went on that trip with are still some of my closest friends today. It was such an amazing experience.

<h2>How has Grill’d supported you in your incredible 15-year (and counting) journey? </h2>
Grill’d was really supportive during my pregnancy. I was a restaurant manager at Windsor but towards the end of my pregnancy they let me move into the support office where I helped out in Operations. During that time I helped a lot with setting up Uber eats and the new Grill’d at Melbourne Airport. 
After coming back from maternity leave I was able to pick my hours and when I worked. I started with only a couple of shifts a week as a Supporting Restaurant Manager and then I eventually moved back to full time as a Restaurant Manager at Swan St.

<h2>You must be pretty busy managing a restaurant and having a two-year-old. How do you make it work? </h2>
I&#8217;m a lot better at managing my time now. I have the flexibility to set my shifts around my son&#8217;s daycare. So, If I need two days off in a row I can plan that in. 
I used to do a lot of work outside of work hours but now I’m a lot better at managing mine and my team’s time.  I still work the same hours but it&#8217;s definitely more flexible. Grill’d has really looked after me which I&#8217;m really grateful for.

<h2>What are your duties at Grill’d and what do you love about your job?</h2>
Providing great customer service and making amazing burgers! But more importantly, my role involves a lot of training and hiring new team members. 
My favourite part of my job is developing a team. We&#8217;ve had so many people that have gone from team members to team leaders and from team leaders to Assistant Restaurant managers &#8211; I really enjoy seeing people develop both personally and professionally; seeing team members grow up and come into themselves is very rewarding. We often have shy 15 year old kids who really come out of their shells.
I also really love the peak times. I know it sounds crazy, but the dinner and lunch rush is great. Being on the servery or wrapping the burgers on a super busy shift is a lot of fun. Especially with events when we&#8217;re really busy. I really love that.

<h2>What would you say to someone thinking of working at Grill’d?</h2>
The people you meet, the culture, the values. There are so many different routes for progression as well. If you come up through a restaurant you can go on to be a franchise partner, work in the support office or become an area manager. I&#8217;ve worked for 13 years and if I didn&#8217;t love it I wouldn&#8217;t have stayed for so long! I still love it every day here. Come work with us! You won’t regret it.
